Sister Maureen Costelloe

Sister Maureen Costelloe died peacefully at Our Lady of Mercy Convent, Auburn on Monday June 2, 2025. Born to John and Ellen Costelloe on April 4, 1931, in Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on July 9, 1951. She was professed on May 10, 1952. Sister Maureen wholeheartedly gave her life to the poor, sick and ignorant for over 70 years.

Sister Maureen, known for many years as Sister Mary Annunciata, is predeceased by her parents, her brother Sean, and sister Brenda (Kennelly) and is survived by her sisters Una (McCarthy) and Carmel (Ross) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Sister Maureen was a dedicated elementary educator during the first 26 years of her ministry, teaching at St. Joseph School, Redding; Holy Cross School, West Sacramento; Sacred Heart School, Anderson; St. Joseph School, Sacramento; St. Joseph School, Auburn; Our Lady of Fatima School, Sacramento; and Holy Spirit School, Sacramento before leaving education due to ill health in 1981.

Always eager to invite others to consider life as a Sister of Mercy, Sister Maureen worked in vocation ministry in Abbeylands, Ardfert, Co. Kerry, Ireland during the late 1960's. This experience called forth her gift of listening and companioning which led her to give the next 30 years of her life in service as minister and coordinator of Ministry to the Sick at St. Joseph/St. Teresa Parishes in Auburn before retiring in 2012.

A vigil service will be held for her on Tuesday June 10th at 6:30pm at the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy, 535 Sacramento Street, Auburn, CA. The funeral liturgy will take place at the Convent on Wednesday June 11, at 10:30am.
