Sister Mary St. Michael Myles

Sister Mary St. Michael Myles, RSM died peacefully on May 7 at Our Lady of Mercy Convent, Auburn, CA. A Sister of Mercy for 70 years, she was 93.

Born to John and Eileen Myles in Castlemaine, Co. Kerry, Ireland on March 15, 1933, she was one of seven children. She is preceded in death by her parents Eileen and John, by her sister Margaret and brothers Robert, William, Michael, and Charles. Her uncle, Fr. Michael Myles, a priest of the Diocese of Sacramento, also preceded her in death. Sister St. Michael is survived by her brother, Fr. John Joseph Myles, Diocese of Sacramento, by her sister-in-law Mary Myles, and by her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

After her graduation from St. Andrew’s Nursing School in London, Sister St. Michael entered the Sisters of Mercy on August 15, 1955. She embarked on a nursing career that spanned almost thirty years, spending most of her ministry years at Mercy General Hospital, Sacramento. Only one year found her at a different hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Redding. Sister St. Michael served as a nurse in pediatrics and obstetrics, as Director of Nursing Services, Director of Mission Services and Coordinator of the Mercy Guild and Mercy volunteers. One role which kindled her passion was the role as Sister Liaison to the Emergency Department. She also served as Director of Postulants for three years. Due to declining health, Sister retired from Mercy General in 2010.

A vigil service will be held on Sunday May 17 at 2pm at the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy, 535 Sacramento Street, Auburn, CA 95603. The funeral liturgy will take place on Monday May 18, at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Parish, 1040 39th Street, Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in her memory to the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, 535 Sacramento Street, Auburn, CA. 95603 or to The Mercy Guild and Volunteers at Mercy General Hospital Sacramento, 4001 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95819.
