Mel was born in Eureka South Dakota and moved at a young age to Sacramento with siblings Walter and Marlene. He graduated Sacramento High in 1950 then enlisted in the Marines, serving in Korea. Mel worked at Southern Pacific while he got his college degree then worked for Real Estate Division Sacramento County until retirement.

Mel loved and was loved by his wife of 67 years Faith (Pat) Davis; daughters Christine (Dennis Hobart) and Melissa (deceased)(Steve Magee); grandchildren Kimberly Hobart (Richard Myers), Andrew Melroy Magee, Stephanie Magee, Diedre Hobart (Dominic Enes), and Alissa Magee (Brandan Dillon); great-grandchildren Tristen, Josie, Max Melroy and Avery Myers, and Emilyn, Ethan and Denver Dillon; along with sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Mel enjoyed being with family, jogging, fishing, gardening, attending Trinity Lutheran Church, and having coffee and donuts with childhood friends including Jim Forsty.

Mel was laid to rest on February 20 2025 at Sacramento Valley National Cemetaty in Dixon, and received military honors for his service. Thanks to Waterleaf Assisted Living for their care of him in his last year.
