John Owen Womach

John Owen Womach was born in Spokane, Washington on December 24, 1945, the son of John Ferris and June Ellen Womach. He had three younger siblings: Cheary Womach (deceased), Pam Smith, living in Spokane, and Tim Womach (deceased). He met Joan Marie DeFontaine while both were in school in St. Louis, and they were married on December 26, 1970. Together they have two sons, Kurt Matthew Womach of Austin, Texas and Justin Andrew Womach of Morgan Hill, California. They have six grandchildren: Christian Parker of Redwood City, California, Kayla Womach, and Zachary Womach, children of Kurt and his wife, Lisa; Owen, Payton, and Grace Womach, children of Justin and his wife, Nina. He grew up in a loving, tightly knit family, and he carried that value throughout his life. He made his journey to the Lord on March 4, 2026.

John received an undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and attended medical school at Saint Louis University. He completed his medical training in ob/gyn at the University of California, Davis Hospital. John loved the awesome experience of bringing new babies into the world. He practiced in the Sacramento area for forty years and delivered literally thousands of babies over those decades. A special joy in later years was to deliver the babies of Moms whom he had delivered as babies themselves! In the ten years since his retirement, he has also enjoyed regular retirement lunches with fellow retired co-workers.

Love of family was a top priority throughout his life. Despite a busy profession, he somehow managed to be there for school events, soccer games, birthdays, picnics...any important event for his family. John loved the outdoors and spending time hiking and boating with his family as well as friends, mainly in and around the Lake Almanor area. There are many heartwarming memories of the hours spent in those activities together and spending holidays at the lake as well. Watching July 4 fireworks on the lake was an annual highlight for the whole family. Returning to the dock at night with literally hundreds of other boats was also memorable!

John also enjoyed sports, both watching and participating. He spent many enjoyable hours playing racquetball in his younger years and golf throughout much of his life with family and friends. He also loved flying and earned a private pilot license along with his dad at around age 20. As a young family man, he realized the dream of having a plane, and for several years there were a number of amazing, adventuresome excursions, the biggest being navigating the way to Missouri and back for a convention and visiting relatives. Eventually, he realized that he didn’t have enough time available to remain current in his pilot skills and reluctantly put that dream to rest.

Last but certainly not least, John was a deeply spiritual man, though not a member of any specific church. Especially after he retired, he spent many hours in bible reading and bible study groups, watching countless videos and blogs of theological discussions, and in prayer and reflection. This also gave him so much comfort in dealing with his serious health issues in recent years.

Per John’s wishes, his memorial gathering will be for immediate family only.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to offer a remembrance of John, the following charities were favorites of his: Tunnels to Towers Foundation (t2t.org), St. Joseph’s Indian School (stjo.org), or a local charity, Union Gospel Mission Sacramento, PO Box 1108, Sacramento, CA 95812.
