Casimir (Cass) A. Mastalski

September 1, 1932 — April 22, 2023

Casimir (Cass) A. Mastalski

Passed away on April 22, 2023 in Sacramento.  Son of the late Thecla and John Mastalski, Cass was born in Portage, PA. on September 1, 1932.  He moved with his family to Detroit, Michigan and graduated from St. Hedwig High School.  Following a year in Pharmacy School at Wayne State University, he joined the Air Force in 1951 and attended Electronics School in Buloxi, Mississippi before being transferred to Mather AFB in Sacramento where he met and married Nancy Lee Frantz in 1952.  After his discharge in 1954, he continued his career in Electronics at Aerojet- General and McDonald- Douglas in the Aerospace business, working on the Titan Missile, NERVA Nuclear Rocket Engine, and the Saturn Moon Rocket.  After Nancy’s sudden death in 1972, he married Mary Sweigert, and helped her raise their combined family of 12 children.  He continued his career at McClellan AFB as a Logistician and Program Manager on various types of aircraft and on the Space Shuttle.  In 1986 he received his “job of a lifetime” with an assignment to RAF Lakenheath, England as the F-111 Weapons System Logistics Officer (WSLO).

He and Mary spent 3 1/2 wonderful years there, playing golf all over England, Scotland and Ireland and visiting many historical places.  He returned to McClellan and eventually retired in 1990.  He continued his career working for numerous local Aerospace contractors, mostly in a part- time capacity, so work wouldn’t interfere with his passion, golf.

Besides family, his other passions were singing and music.  He sang in church choirs at St. Ignatius and Presentation churches; performed in Children’s Home Guild “La Frantics”, Jesuit’s “Spring Fling”, and other local productions.  He was active in local SIRS Br. 23 as the 18- hole “Golf Director”, and a member of the Sacramento Pioneer Association.

Predeceased by brother John of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and sister Helen Wozniak of Detroit, Michigan. Survived by wife Mary, sister Josephine Demps, daughter Laurie Moede, sons David, Brian, John and Kevin Mastalski; stepchildren Patricia Setzer, William, Robert, Daniel, David, Paul, and James Sweigert. Also survived by numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great- great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  He was affectionately known as “Grumps” to all.

Final “Tee” times will be: Rosary, Sunday, April 30 at 7:00 pm and Funeral service on Monday, May 1 at       10:00 am, St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3235 Arden Way.   Burial will be private.
