Sacramento lost someone truly special on April 15, 2026. A lifelong Sacramentan, Barbara Zanze passed away peacefully, leaving behind a community that is stronger, closer, and more vibrant because of her. She was the best part of every party—and the heart of every room she walked into.
Barbara was a devoted wife to her husband of nearly 50 years, Roger; a deeply loving mother to her son, Joe and daughter-in-law Nikki; and adoring grandmother to her greatest joy, her grandson, River. She is also survived by her brother, Jeff; a cherished extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws; and a vast circle of friends who were every bit as much her family.
To know Barbara was to know “the fun one”—she was a natural firecracker and a true bridge builder with a rare gift for turning strangers into friends and friends into lifelong family. She showed up fully for the people she loved, bringing an unmistakable energy into every room she entered—the perfect mix of strong, caring, and lovingly stubborn, with an unwavering belief that life should be just a little more special, and a lot more fun.
Barbara possessed a unique talent for lifting the spirits of everyone around her, transforming ordinary moments into something special. Nowhere was this more evident than in her legendary insistence on a proper cocktail napkin. It was a cherished tradition that made every gathering feel intentional and elegant. With charm, persistence, and a shared laugh, she would ensure a stack was brought to the table, creating the perfect atmosphere and turning even a casual happy hour into a memorable occasion.
Barbara cherished her many traditions, from annual girls' trips to Santa Cruz to Friday breakfasts with her gym crew to her lifelong passion for baseball. She cheered for Roger, then Joe, from the stands and was always tuned in to whatever game was on. But above all, she loved being “Grammy” to River. She was the best Grammy anyone could ask for—playful, devoted, and endlessly proud. Barbara was always present and fully engaged, showering him with a love that was as expansive as it was joyful.
Barbara’s legacy is defined by deep, unwavering love, connection, and remarkable positivity. To celebrate that spirit, we will gather for a celebration of her life on May 1st at 3:30 p.m. at the Croatian American Cultural Center (3730 Auburn Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95821). The day will be a true reflection of her: filled with the people she cherished, stories shared, and plenty of laughter.
And of course, there will be plenty of cocktail napkins.
