Alfonso Charles Matinog, born on November 28, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA lived a fulfilling 88 years before passing away on April 27, 2025 in Sacramento, CA. He was the first child born to Alexander Matinog and Ida Sassani.
Al is survived by his faithful wife, Kwang-Ja, and only son, Andy; and his brothers Ronald and John.
Al was most proud of his military service to which he attributed his discipline and the opportunity to travel the world. His service culminated in helping to establish the military library in South Korea soon after the war. Through the GI Bill, Al was able to pursue his love of far eastern cultures at the University of Washington.
Al spent many years in China, Japan, and Korea where he met his wife and began his family. He spoke and read Chinese, Japanese and Korea and enjoyed hearing and learning some of the many languages he found in his daily adventures through the city he loved and settled in, Los Angeles.
He had a deep ability to forbear difficulty and to sacrifice his wants for the betterment of those around him. We are relieved to know that he has fulfilled his duty here on earth and has gone on to a better place. Thank you, Apa.
