JAMES MICHAEL MULHERN of Sacramento passed away from natural causes on December 14, 2018 at the age of 93. Jim was born on April 24, 1925 in Boston, MA to Patrick and Nora. He grew up in Roxbury, a then predominantly Irish neighborhood in inner Boston. As a young man he worked as a longshoreman on the historic Boston Harbor. At the call of WWII Jim enlisted in the Navy and served around the world. His naval duties brought him to California where he met and married Iva Duccini (deceased 1994) and raised three children. Jim co-founded Acme Cabinet shop with his friend Emil Isler in the early 1950’s. A skilled craftsman and a stickler for details, Jim built precision cabinets for many custom installations during 45 years of business. Jim was also a founding partner of Capitol Plywood where he served on the board of directors for many decades before the business was sold last year. During his working years Jim enjoyed the ritual of early morning gatherings with his friends and yearly family vacations to Santa Cruz. He was an ardent supporter of Christian Brothers High School where he donated his skills and countless hours to school improvement projects. He was an honored member of the Lasalle Club and received an honorary degree from CB. In his retirement years Jim was able to share many travel adventures with his beloved partner Rosalie Myers. Fondly known as Big Jim and Gramps, Jim was selflessly devoted to his family and friends; ever generous, always ready to lend a helping hand, quick with a joke, a tease, and cheerful hum and a song. His caring soul will always be remembered. Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife Iva, eldest son Stephen, and grandson Patrick. He is survived by his loving life-partner Rosalie Myers, son Michael Mulhern and wife Cyndy, daughter Wendy Gray and husband Phil, daughter-in-law Joyce Horizumi, grandchildren: Shawna Pawlaczyk, Kim & Jenny Mulhern, Eric & Jennifer Wiegand, Nicole Novi, Josh Gray, and Collin & Misa Mulhern; 13 great grandchildren, and extended family in Sacramento and in the Boston area. The family would like to give immeasurable thanks to caregivers Kim, Chris and Preston who tirelessly and lovingly cared for Dad. Also, many thanks to the hospice caregivers who provided comfort in the final weeks. Family and friends are invited to honor Jim’s life. Visitation at Gormley & Sons, 2015 Capitol Avenue, Thursday Dec 20, 6 to 7 pm, Rosary to follow at 7:00 pm; Funeral Service on Friday Dec 21 at 11:30 am at Gormley & Sons in chapel, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to Christian Brothers High School or a charity of your choice.
